Freelancing, Consulting, Contracting, and Temping

These sites specialize in providing job matching services for short-term employment. The freelancing/contracting/consulting sites usually have a different business model than the temping sites.

On this page you will find Web resources for:

  • Freelancing and Contracting: Sometimes the "client" (person or company seeking to hire a contractor) pays the fee for the matching service. Often, the "consultant" pays for the matching service, typically referred to as a commission. Occasionally, the matching services are free and other for-fee services are offered. Sometimes organizations offer the matching services for free to organization members. Be sure that you understand who pays and how much before you sign up for any of these services!
Find the fees! Most of these sites are supported by fees paid by someone (either the employer or the freelancer). Be sure to read, print, and save any/all of the legal notices appearing on the Web site, particularly the terms and conditions of the site's relationship with you, and the site's privacy policy. These are the legal documents governing your relationship with the site -- your responsibilities and their responsibilities. Be very cautious if you don't see any! And, check the site periodically to see if these documents have been changed.
  • Temping: Most of these sites are the Web versions of "real" employment agencies with names familiar to generations of job seekers. They hire the temporary worker and then sell the worker's services to an employer. So the "temp" worker receives their paycheck from the agency. Typically, employers may offer the temporary worker a permanent job, but terms and conditions apply that usually cost the employer an additional fee. This raises your cost of hire, but it gives both you and the employer an opportunity to "try before you buy" - testing the relationship and the job fit.

  • Networking & Support: Several good sites exist that will help you avoid potential pitfalls and make the networking connections that will help you succeed. Frequently they offer services for sale in addition to the information they provide. Associations usually offer free services but you must pay to attend the meetings or pay to join the organization. No free lunch, anywhere. Check out Job-Hunt's Associations & Societies section for over 300 additional national/international groups and other resources.

In addition to the sites below, many other sites also offer short-term employment opportunities, as well, particularly in the computer field. If you don't find what you need here, check out the Employment Super Sites, Computers and Technology, or some of the Recruiting and/or General sites that are in your specialty. There are also Newsgroups which have listings offering contract employment, too.

Freelancing and Contracting Resources

Most of these sites require that you complete a registration form with your contact information before you can search through the opportunities posted by potential employers. Be sure to track down and read the "terms of use" and privacy policy for each site before you register. Don't proceed unless the terms and privacy policy are acceptable to you.

  • Elance - businesses post "projects" (by category) and evaluate the "bids" from "service providers." The fee for this matching service is paid by the service provider. A rating system provides pre-selection feedback on the service providers. A privacy policy is posted.
  • Guru.com - connects independent professionals (a.k.a. "gurus") with contract projects posted by "hirers." Once you have completed their extensive profile, which includes work style preference analysis, you can search for contract or permanent opportunities by category (technology, creative, business, or additional), subcategory, location, and/or keyword. A privacy policy is posted.
  • Net-Temps - an employment portal targeted specifically to the contract and temporary employment markets. A privacy policy is posted.

Temporary Agencies

Be sure to check with your local yellow pages for listings of local temp agencies. These are mostly national and international.

  • AccounTemps - an international temporary employment agency specializing in finance and accounting positions, search by city and state or province (in the U.S. and Canada) and keyword. Most positions indicate a start date and a duration. A Privacy Policy is posted. Links to AccounTemp sites in Europe are available by country.
  • Adecco - an international temporary employment agency supplying the services of both temporary and full-time clerical, industrial, and technical associates. Registration is required before searching the jobs. A prvacy policy is posted. AppleOne - offers temporary and permanent general business and light industry positions across the U.S. and Canada. Associates are provided with a full range of benefits, including medical, dental, and 401k. A brief privacy statement is posted. Kelly Services - pick your country and language. Then, search for a job.
  • Olsten - list of office locations and methods of contacting Olsten.

Networking and Support (U.S. Nation-wide)

Check the listing for your state, if you are in the U.S., for local resources. For more national and international organizations, check out Job-Hunt's Associations and Societies section for 300 groups.

  • Independent Computer Consultants Association - a national U.S. organization with chapters scattered across the country, from Atlanta to Silicon Valley, provides support to IT consultants. Services range from on-line forums and monthly chapter meetings to conferences and a directory of members that is searchable by visitors looking for consultants. There is a fee to join and services on the site "for members only."
  • Institute of Management Consultants - a national U.S. Organization which certifies management consultants, offers their "Find a Consultant" directory to visitors interested in hiring an IMC member for an assignment. Most chapters hold regular meetings and offer professional development opportunities, and there is a fee to join.
  • WorkingSolo - a resource and advice site from Terri Lonier, author of several books on the topic of working solo.
