Employers’ Websites seem like a good place to look for a job. Every day, more employers every day are catching on to that fact.

Employer Web Sites

Hopefully, you have some companies on your “target employers” list. So, visit those employers’ Web sites. Often, job openings are listed on the employer Website, and, frequently, they are NOT posted anywhere else.

Not every employer or Web team “gets it” about using the Website for recruiting. But, every day, more catch on. We’ve noticed that hospitals, medical centers, and 99% of the Fortune 500 post jobs on their Websites and 95% of the Fortune 500 offer obvious links to their job opportunities on their home pages.

Finding Employer Websites

Search engines like Google, MSN, or Yahoo should help if you already know the name of your target employer. (See Job-Hunt's "Google-ize Your Job Search" article for tips on using Google more effectively.)

Other sources:

• Job-Hunt's Employment Resources by State section contains links to the employment sections of Web sites of over 6,300 employers, organized by state, including government and education employers as well as companies.

• Job-Hunt's Fortune 500 employers by state for 2006 - the really big companies in the US, Job-Hunt links to Fortune's excellent "snapshot" of each company (sales, profitability, industry, competitors, news, and press releases) and the company employment page.

• If you are interested in starting at the top of the Fortune 500 and working your way down, see Job-Hunt's Fortune 500 by rank for 2006.

• If you are interested in smaller, fast-growing companies, check out Job-Hunt's Fortune Small Business Fastest Growing 100 by state for 2006.

Academic360 - a directory of college and university Web site employment sections - opportunities aren't limited to teaching. These schools can have quite large staffs, including the usual corporate functions like marketing, IT, administration, finance, and also more specialized functions like fund raising, food services, maintenance of building and grounds, even construction and energy generation/conservation.

Directory of America's Hospitals - pick your state and city to find the hospitals from US News & World Reports. Like colleges and universities, many hospitals have very large staffs, in addition to the medical staffs required. They also need marketing, development, project management, IT, finance, etc., and this is one of the hot growth industries for the foreseeable future.

BankDirectory.net - a directory of banks in the USA, organized by state

USAjobs - the job site for Uncle Sam, if you want to work in the U.S. Federal Government.

• Web yellow pages sites like the SuperPages can provide a list of possible employers and, sometimes, links to the employers' Web sites (browse the companies listed in the categories that interest you or that hold the most potential for the kind of job you want)

• The Pick Your Employer section of Job-Hunt has these and additional resources for finding employers.
